New Construction and Renovation Guidelines Residential Projects – 8th Edition

Plan Review
The Plymouth Fire Department conducts plans reviews for fire protection systems in accordance with the Massachusetts State Building Code 8th edition, chapter 9 which includes requirements for a Fire Protection Narrative Report. According to 780 CMR 51.00, when one or more sleeping rooms are added or created in existing dwellings, the entire existing dwelling shall be upgraded to the 8th Edition Building Code. If the dwelling undergoes complete reconstruction such that all walls and ceilings are open to framing, then the entire existing building shall be provided with smoke detectors, heat detector and carbon monoxide detectors.

One set of original plans is sufficient for our office.

The plan review fee is $75.00, and the review time is 5-10 days. Plans may be submitted in person or by mail. Checks are payable to the Town of Plymouth.

Plans shall include all smoke detectors/carbon monoxide alarms in proper locations as per the Massachusetts Guide to Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Requirements.

The application form for construction, (Building Permit) is available through the Building Department. On that form the Fire Department will sign off as to whether or not a smoke permit is required. If a smoke permit is required, an additional fee of $50.00 will be required and the property must be inspected upon completion of construction or renovation.
